Dr. Kevin Ward

Kevin was awarded his PhD for investigations into the freeze drying of pharmaceutical formulations and drug/vaccine delivery systems, focusing on the use of protective agents in formulations of proteins and liposomes. Kevin joined Biopharma in March 2000 and is the R&D Director of the independent R&D and analysis consultancy division; prior to joining the team, Kevin worked at Pfizer Central Research and as a Research Fellow in vaccine development at Aston University.

Kevin lectures on freeze drying extensively, as part of our freeze drying training courses and as a regular on the conference circuit, has been an industrial supervisor to two PhD students, and is a member of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences Parenterals Group. At Biopharma, Kevin has had direct involvement in the freeze-drying R&D of a diverse range of materials and also chairs the PHSS Freeze Drying Special Interest Group, an international working group that produces monographs on practical aspects of freeze-drying technology.


Thomas Peacock MSc

Tom has specialized in the field of lyophilisation since 2006 and has an MSc in Pharmaceutical Analysis.

Whilst working within our independent R&D consultancy division (BTL), Tom took a leading role in managing BTL’s commercial projects, handling client enquiries and new products specifically in the pharmaceutical and diagnostics fields, characterizing products suitable for freeze drying, looking at key factors and designing robust and efficient cycles. He was involved with the development of over 300 individual freeze-dried products in the R&D, clinical trial and production stages and was also responsible for running training courses at our site in Winchester and various locations worldwide.  Tom has has travelled extensively commissioning freeze drying microscopes, one of the vital instruments used in development work. In 2013, Tom moved to DSTL where he now works as a Health Physicist but maintains his link with Biopharma and freeze drying technologies by being actively involved in our training courses.


Dr. Edmond Ekenlebie

Edmond joined Biopharma in 2014 a Senior Scientist after receiving his a PhD from Aston University in Birmingham, UK. His PhD focused on the optimisation of the bulk freeze drying process and the implications of powder rheology using methods including the novel use of Micro X-ray tomography. He also holds an MSc in Pharmaceutical Science with Management Studies (Distinction) from Kingston University in London. A Pharmacist since 2006, Edmond previously held managerial roles as both Locum and Superintendent Pharmacist alongside running a successful business in nutriceuticals.

Dr Ekenlebie currently offers his expertise by way of consultancy, training courses and at conferences to our worldwide client base and remains heavily involved in research work. His current research collaboration is focused on recombinant vaccine formulation development to break the cold chain.


Kevin Smith

Feb 2016.2Kevin joined Biopharma in 1993 following a career in the Royal Navy specialising in refrigeration and air conditioning applications and was promoted to Technical & Service Director in 2014. Since 1993, Kevin has carried out installations, qualifications and re-location of a variety of freeze drying machines throughout Europe, Africa, India, China and USA.

Kevin has built up a strong service department responsible for the installation, site acceptance testing and qualification together with the ongoing technical support of a wide range of machines ranging from the small bench-top laboratory machines to very large fully automated production equipment.  Most of the customary documentation, maintenance and qualification protocols were written by Kevin in association with Biopharma’s previous Technical Director, Richard Wood, this allows Kevin to be a veritable mine of information garnered both from extensive industry experience and from his time working with Richard Wood.
